Public services in public hands
In 2023 Whitehorse Council controversially decided to privatise the operations of Aqualink Box Hill and Nunawading. They also chose to close Aqualink’s childcare service. This decision has sparked a lot of concern and opposition within our community.
The Whitehorse Residents And Ratepayers Association (WRARA) submitted a petition to the council with thousands of signatures. This petition represented a clear and unified position from residents, asking the council to maintain the current management of these community facilities. Despite this overwhelming show of public concern, the council is proceeding with the privatisation plan.
The impacts of this decision are far-reaching. Key users of Aqualink’s facilities, are expected to face significant challenges as a result. Outsourcing operations often puts profit over quality, leading to a reduction in the standard of services provided. This shift could undermine the excellent programs and services that our community has come to rely on. Why change what has been working so well?
While the current council may argue that this decision is financially necessary , it is crucial to consider the long-term impacts on service quality and community well-being. Outsourcing should not come at the expense of the high standards and accessibility that our residents deserve.
