Investing in open space

Since 2006, Whitehorse’s population has increased by about 15% (as of 2021). As more people have moved in, the open space available per resident has decreased. The council predicts that by 2036, our population will grow by another 22% . In Blackburn alone, Council forecasts a 26% increase.

In 2022-2023, the council spent $3.5 million on parks, open space, and streetscapes. Whitehorse council also has collected $58 million (as of 2023) from the Whitehorse Development Contributions Plan . This money could be used to improve our community’s green areas.

The 2024 Open Space Strategy is a positive step. However, it is clear that the council needs to invest more in open space per resident. Council should use the “Public open space reserve” to protect and enhance our parks and open spaces for everyone. Parks for kids, sporting grounds, bushwalks all provide positive impacts on our daily lives.

With our growing population exceeding projections, it's crucial that we ensure our community has enough open space to enjoy. Let's work together to make sure the council prioritises this important issue and invests in the future of our community.
